In an exclusive interview with CanadianSME Small Business Magazine, Robin Chow, CEO of XBASE Technologies, shares insights on how his company has adapted, innovated, and led the way in managed IT services for over three decades.
From network monitoring and cybersecurity to strategic IT consulting, XBASE Technologies has built a reputation for delivering enterprise-grade IT solutions tailored for small and medium-sized businesses. With cyber threats evolving at an alarming pace and AI reshaping the business landscape, Robin discusses how XBASE Technologies stays ahead of industry challenges, implements real-time security innovations, and ensures that its clients remain secure, scalable, and competitive.
Robin Chow, CEO of XBASE Technologies since 1988, has dedicated his life to the pursuit of knowledge with a sharp focus on technology. At the age of 13, he enrolled at George Brown College in Toronto to begin studying microprocessor design—a formative experience that propelled him into a lifelong career at the cutting edge of IT. Over the decades, Robin has consulted for governments, major financial institutions, and unnamed three-letter agencies, honing his expertise in high-security environments. An avid member of MSP peer groups and an active representative of the MSP community, he continues to champion innovation and robust solutions for organizations seeking best-in-class managed IT services.
As a managed IT service provider since 1988, how has XBASE Technologies adapted its services to meet the evolving needs of small and medium-sized businesses in the digital age?
XBASE began as a value-added reseller (VAR), initially focusing on hardware procurement and setup. Over time, we recognized the need for more specialized services, so we expanded into software development, offering custom-built solutions rather than generic, off-the-shelf products. This software-focused phase honed our ability to tackle complex client challenges and propelled us to explore larger-scale projects, particularly in the financial sector.
By outsourcing for major financial institutions, we gained extensive experience in enterprise networking, high-security environments, and stringent uptime requirements. This provided us with the tools to design and maintain robust data centers and secure infrastructures. Realizing that SMBs often face similar issues—albeit with tighter budgets and fewer resources—we adapted these enterprise-grade skills for smaller organizations.
Today, we offer proactive network monitoring, data center services, strategic consulting, and security expertise. Our continued success hinges on translating the lessons and rigor from enterprise settings into accessible services that keep SMBs secure, scalable, and competitive.
XBASE Technologies offers a wide range of services, from network monitoring to cybersecurity. How do you tailor your solutions to address the unique challenges faced by different industries such as financial services, manufacturing, and non-profit organizations?
We begin by listening carefully to each client’s needs, confirming whether those needs align with our expertise. Financial services might prioritize encryption, secure remote access, and compliance measures; manufacturing clients often need real-time monitoring, reliable networks, and strategic downtime planning; and non-profits typically seek cost-effective solutions that protect donor data and accommodate volunteer workforces.
Our process starts with a thorough assessment of each client’s existing infrastructure, operational workflows, and future goals. From there, we align the right services—whether network monitoring, managed security, or compliance consulting—to address each organization’s core challenges. We also maintain a policy of selective onboarding: if a client won’t take cybersecurity seriously, we will choose to walk away to protect our reputation.
By offering flexible service-level agreements, consistent communication, and strategic roadmaps, we ensure solutions remain relevant as market conditions, regulatory requirements, and technology evolve. This industry-tailored, partnership-driven model ensures we deliver measurable impact, rather than a one-size-fits-all approach.

With cybersecurity threats constantly evolving, how does XBASE Technologies stay ahead of the curve in protecting its clients’ data and systems? Can you share an example of a recent innovation or strategy you’ve implemented?
We stay on the leading edge by collaborating with top-tier ransomware recovery and forensic teams. Whenever these partners restore breached systems, we gain direct insight into the latest malicious tools and tactics employed by threat actors. This intelligence feeds right back into our security protocols, enabling us to refine everything from endpoint protection to email filtering.
For example, we recently upgraded our Endpoint Detection and Response (EDR) platform to use behavior-based detection. After investigating a major ransomware incident, we realized that early indicators—like unusual encryption operations—could flag attacks sooner. Our enhanced EDR now identifies suspicious actions in real time and quarantines affected systems to prevent malware spread.
Beyond tooling, we regularly update internal procedures and user policies. Educating staff and clients about emerging threats remains a priority, so we hold security workshops and drills that reinforce best practices. By combining fresh intelligence, robust technologies, and continuous training, we ensure threats are addressed before they escalate.
Your company prides itself on providing 24/7 support and having a team of certified experts. How do you ensure that your staff maintains a high level of expertise and customer service in such a rapidly changing tech landscape?
We foster a culture where continuous learning is both an expectation and a passion. Our technical staff undergoes ongoing education, pursuing certifications with industry-leading vendors such as Microsoft, Cisco, VMware, and security-focused organizations. These formal credentials are just the starting point: hands-on experience in live labs allows our team to experiment with new software, network configurations, and security strategies in a risk-free environment.
Mentorship is also central to how we grow expertise. Experienced engineers guide newer hires, accelerating knowledge transfer through real-world troubleshooting sessions and “lunch and learn” workshops. Moreover, we encourage curiosity; many on our team are “tech enthusiasts” who love exploring cutting-edge technologies on their own. This passion translates into a constant drive to improve our service delivery.
Lastly, we emphasize customer communication skills. Our goal is to resolve issues effectively and explain processes clearly, ensuring clients feel supported. Performance metrics and customer feedback loops help us refine these skills over time.
Looking ahead, what do you see as the most significant IT challenges facing SMBs in the next 5 years, and how is XBASE Technologies positioning itself to help clients overcome these obstacles?
Two major forces will shape SMB technology: cybersecurity threats and the rise of AI. Both develop at a breakneck pace, making rigid, long-term planning inadequate. Instead, we embrace a flexible “learn and adjust” philosophy.
In cybersecurity, we implement continuous threat monitoring and maintain partnerships with forensic experts to stay updated on evolving attacks. SMBs often lack the resources for top-tier security teams, so we adapt enterprise-grade practices to suit smaller budgets and infrastructures. Regular policy reviews, end-user education, and iterative improvements ensure our defenses remain effective.
